hello from the wonderful world of a probably decided urban riding.
i’m trying desperately to find something interesting to say about toronto-danforth and failing miserably.
as you may know, Jack Layton holds this riding and is expected to win it again, at least according to everything i’ve heard to date. it’s a tough slog fighting against a national party leader in a local riding, and i don’t really expect anyone to take this one from the ndp.
regardless, the liberals are running Andrew Lang, who is apparently the son of aTrudeau era cabinet minister and was the constituency manager for Bill Graham. the conservatives are running Christina Perreault, a political novice and sacrifical lamb (given the chances the conservatives have of winning this very left leaning riding). the greens have fielded Sharon Howarth, a local environmental and community activist.
so that’s what we’ve got to work with. last election Jack won the riding by 7156 votes, which is a pretty big margin to beat all things being equal. of course things aren’t ever equal in politics, but it seems unlikely that he’ll lose. i’m going to keep my ears open though, i’d love for this race to get interesting.

Sad to say, Jack Layton will win. However, to say Christina Perreault, is a “sacrficial lamb” is a bit presumptious on your part. Does this mean that all young women who run are merely “sacrificial” or does it mean what the editor thinks it means?? Women have to start of somewhere to gain experience, so why not up against the best, Jack Layton? I say, congratulations Christina for having the will and determination to run and provide those in the riding who like Harper (while not many) with a choice. Let’s see where this brings her in the future…not a bad resume for a young Politician.
There is a longstanding practice, committed by all the major parties, of fielding female candidates in no chance ridings in a cynical attempt to make the party in question look like it’s working to advance women in politics without actually doing anything to advance women in politics.
Whether that was the case here wasn’t addressed in Mr. Chartier’s post, so I wonder why you immediately concluded that the remark was about gender.
In any event, I would rather see women gaining political experience by actually sitting in office than campaigning for yet another lost cause. I daresay we are more than ready.
