Welcome to DemocraticSPACE

Featured across Canada in national and regional media, DemocraticSPACE is one of Canada’s leading non-partisan websites for provincial and federal election news, political commentary and analysis, and riding-by-riding discussion. Our audience includes political observers from across the political spectrum, as well as reporters, MPs and Parliament Hill staffers, and everyday voters just looking to be a bit more informed.

Among our most popular features is our seat projections. Using recent regional polling data and historical trends, as well as on-the-ground reports from our regional correspondents, we make vote projections for every riding.

In 2008, we made a “call” in 266 ridings, 258 right and 8 wrong, a rate of 97%. Of the 42 ridings that were too-close-to-call (where the 3% range in our projections overlapped for more than one candidate), the model gave a slight edge to the eventual winner about two-thirds of the time. Factoring both called and too-close-to-call ridings, the model correctly projected 283 ridings, or 92%.
