Between Jack Layton’s apparent deal with Stephen Harper to try to keep Elizabeth May out of the debate and his refusal to attend all candidates meetings in his own riding (where I live), while I won’t spoil or decline my ballot this year, I certainly won’t be marking it for Mr. Layton.

I attended the leaders debate in 2004. What happened to Loftus Cuddy? When the candidates were asked a question about global warming, Loftus Cuddy responded “we do not follow dubious science”. Cuddy obviously didn’t fare well but sadly he is about the most progressive Conservatives!

The Toronto Star, last Saturday, carried a story on “Tory Candidate’s tight-lipped” written by Linda Diebel and Robyn Doolittle and referred to The Conservative Candidate in Toronto-Danforth, Christina Perreault, as refusing to show up for a debate on housing and homelessness. It would make one believe that Jack Layton and the other candidates did show up. The reality is that no one showed up to debate. This type of writing is not Journalism, it is opinion writing and bias at that.

I am asking this question on behalf of my father, dr. Gunther Gohlich he would like to know what threatens Canada the most and how can we truly be called a country when each province has control over its own resources? Shouldn’t we be like a family or even a group of close friends and share with each other what we have? Could the constitution be rewritten or amended so that we could truly be one? Please pass this along to Mr. Dion. I would be Grateful if you did … Thank you so much, from me and my father. Thank you. Sincerly Christel Gohlich. P.S. I feel we are rich enough country to beable to share with one another, because Frankly … everything is better when it is shared.

Tonight, after being ill for the past week, I pulled it together to attend the ALL CANDIDATES debate for Toronto-Danforth. To say I was disappointed to see you were absent is an understatement. Instead of seeing you seated with the other candidates on stage, I walked into a debate as to whether or not the audience would allow a ‘stand-in’ to represent YOUR responses. How pompous!

Your absence was disrespectful to your fellow candidates who have taken on a civic duty and put themselves in front of the community to be our representative, not to mention the willingness to take on an incumbent, let alone a national party leader. Your absence was also disrespectful of your constituents.

This debate, after two rounds of voting, consumed the first twenty plus minutes of an evening that was to hear the concerns of Toronto-Danforth and how each would address the issue. You took the citizens of Toronto-Danforth for granted tonight.

As the clock reached 9:45, the moderator cut off the questioning even though several people stood in queue for some time waiting for their chance to ask a question of the candidates. We were putting in our time to become informed voters. Your assumption that we will re-elect you into Parliament cost the people of this riding twenty plus minutes of the democratic process to handle your presumptive absence and attempt to drop-in a proxy.

I am writing to tell you that my vote is not available for being taken for granted. My vote will be cast for the candidate who truly understands the issues because they live in the riding, has respect for the people they will represent, and won’t take my vote for granted.

I was unable to attend the all candidates meeting and, unfortunately, S. Nardi fails to disclose the person who didn’t show up. I can only assume it was Jack Layton, but I would not be able to guess that from Mr/Ms Nardi’s post.
