Terrance Young almost won Oakville in 2006. Bonnie Brown has been very lucky to face a devided conservative vote in 1993, 1997 and 2000 and a new party, the CPC in 2004. Young should finally take this for the CPC. The CPC/Liberal fault line will move a bit more into towards Toronto.
I think that the Oakville electorate is well-educated and higher income that predisposes them to understanding environmental challenges and has the funds to take action. With greater reductions in personal and corporate income tax coupled with retro-fit green mortgages, Oakville residents will be actively courted by the liberal party. Bonnie Brown has also been promoted to the front bench of the Liberal party since the 2006 election. Oakvillians care about the environment which can be seen from how its municipal government has tackled the problem.
This is going to be one of the races to watch. I do not agree with your current projection as it is much too early to tell. It is true the Liberals won this seat by a very small margin last election, and based purely on that you may justify your projection. However, this Riding is special with very sophisticated voters. Keep in mind that many liberals were disenchanted with their own party. Some listened to Jack layton’s plea to lend him their votes, in addition to an exceptional NDP candidate in 2006 who took about 2000 liberal votes. With this in mind I would maintain that it is early to tell. I will post later on once things start to take shape.
Harper was in Oakville this past week. The CPC war room concentrates where its prospects are in play. And they are in play in Oakville. Surging NDP and Green numbers mean more trouble for incumbant Liberal MP Bonnie Brown than they do for CPC challenger Terence Young. Kind of ironic – Bonnie Brown was blessed for three elections (1993, 1997 and 2000) with a devided conservative vote. Now Terence Young appears poised to benefit from a devided liberal vote in 2008.
Election is about leadership and with only 700 votes I expect them to gain several seats and sweep Quebec. Liberal brand is shrinking 2-5% across Canada as NDP have grown.
Bonnie Brown has been lucky over many elections to get re-elected due mostly to a divided right. As an Oakville resident I know she has never justified her mandate by her performance in the house of commons. I think in this election her luck is up and rightfully so.
Tim has it summed up. Bonnie Brown was in that group of 98 Ontario Liberals swept to victory in 1993. Except for retirements, this group remained almost entirely intact through 1997 and 2000. Finally in 2004 some significant cracks appeared in the Liberal iceberg as the then new CPC won two dozen seats mostly across Central Ontario. Big chunks broke off the Liberal iceberg in 2006 as the CPC won 40 seats Ontario now pushing into urban seats such as Barrie and Burlington. While there will likely be some Liberal core remaining in Ontario after October 14, the blue wave should this time wash over Oakville at least up to the Mississauga border. CPC candidate Terenece Young will be the beneficiary in Oakville.
We musn’t allow Harper to get re-elected and the only chance we have of doing this is by voting for Bonnie Brown (instead of the NDP or Green candidates). The liberals have the best green plan of all the parties (besides the Green party, which has an excellent green plan, of course, but falters in other areas). The liberal green plan will not only help the environment (and thus our future), but it will also stimulate the economy by creating new jobs in green industries. All proud Oakvillians–and those with a conscience (not just a green one)–have a duty to NOT vote conservative, and the best option we have is Bonnie Brown.
Let’s see. How can we turn Oakville riding, which has one of the highest median income levels in Canada, into a dump? We can bring in Dion’s foolish Green Shaft and make sure economic uncertainty becames economic disaster. Even the NDP is opposed to this lunacy. Green supporters have their own views and are unlikely to abandon the Green Party en masse just to keep the worn out retread Bonnie Brown in her comfy office for even more years than the 15 years that she has already had.
CPC candidate Terrence Young will be a much better MP than Ms. Brown has been lately. He has had an office on Kerr Street long before this election was called and on his own time he has been helping Oakville riding residents with issues that individuals are having with various federal government departments.
It is pretty clear now that the CPC overall will not win a majourity in this election. Bonnie Brown’s scare tactics about Tory majourities thus sound shrill and panic driven. Time for Oakville riding voters to hire a new MP by electing Terrence Young.
It’s clear from these posts that both the blogger and the entries are from Conservative party members or campaigners! I went to an all candidates debate and Terence Young doesn’t hold a candle to Bonnie Brown’s knowledge, or integrity. He wants to make personal insults his campaign platform. No thanks.
I’ve done my own research. He hasn’t had a job since he was an MPP in 1995, when he lost a nomination contest within the conservative party. He’s a lobbyist in a one-man business, and his only income is from an insurance settlement. I was undecided, but after watching Young’s desperation tactics, I don’t want him representing me in Ottawa. I’m voting for a classy, Oakvillian. Bonnie Brown.
Last time in 2006, I admitted that my projection concerning Oakville was in error. This time, it apppears to have been correct.
Mr. Young is too generous an individual to get drawn into such silly accusations as have been made here. It would be interesting to know how someone could not work year after year and yet still afford to live in Oakville.
In any case, it is over now. Mr. Young was gracious in victory and Ms. Brown was likewise gracious in defeat.
