The CPC is at least running a candidate, Paul Calandra, this time who actually gets up in the morning, goes outside and campaigns. The stories about Calandra’s reported legal difficulties relating to family esate matters are so old now, they are likely to have minimal impact. Liberal MP Lui Temilowski has performed better than expected and may be hard to beat this time barring a huge blue wave. Assuming the election after this one is four years away, the unwieldy Oakriges-Markham riding, which straddles east to west accross York Region from Stouffeville though Markham and Riscmond Hill to King City, will be split up under the next electoral resistribution. Mr. Calandra might then consider taking a run at the piece that Lui does not take.

I saw a crew of Calandra supporters out on the trail today in the rain. They came by my house and dropped some their lit piece. Very effective. There must have been 8 of them working the block in the rain. Their signs have exploded across the markham and richmond hill parts of the riding in the last few days and unlike the Liberal guys they are all on private property. I get the feeling that change is in the air in OR-M

According to Angus Reid, the Conservatives are polling 4 points ahead in the 905 belt. I’d say any 905 riding where the Liberals took less than 50% are potentially vulnerable. I’ll give an edge to the Tories in Oak Ridges.

I guess Mr. Calandra can keep the part of the riding that he preffers after redistribution and Lui can run in the other part.

The CPC national campaign obviously helped Mr. Calandra as it helped CPC candidates in Thornhill, Newmarket-Aurora and Oakville among others.

However, Mr. Calandra did campaign and that likely put him over the top. The previous candidate (2006 and 2004) would likely have lost as he did not seem to campaign very much.
