The Tories are running a “star” candidate here, and they have held this riding before. In the north, where candidate matters more then the math, it means a sure win for them.
Not so fast, Nick. Peter Ittinuar is running for the Greens in this riding and he outshines the Tories “star” candidate as being the first elected Inuk to Parliament, one of the founders of Nunavut from conception and a candidate that understands Climate Change and global warming as a more pertinent issue for the Arctic. Peter has a very good chance here.
Even down here on the east coast I have heard of Peter Ittinuar. I know name recognition is stronger in the north than party affiliation and hey – just maybe – the greens may have their first elected MP.
For what it’s worth, all four candidates here are “stars”: Aglukkak is an MLA, Ittinuar is a former MP, Ejesiak is a former city councillor in Iqaluit (the territorial capital and its primary population centre) and a prominent civil servant in the Nunavut government, and Irngaut worked as a journalist for CBC North.
I’d guess that Aglukkak might possess a slight advantage at this point, but I certainly wouldn’t call her a shoo-in based on name recognition alone, because they *all* have name recognition in this riding.
