I returned home from a night out to find a voice mail on my phone. It starts out quite simply (translated):
“Hello. This is a recorded message.”
It turns out it is a recorded message from Pierre Ducasse, the NDP candidate for Hull-Aylmer. He says that if we want nothing to do with the Conservatives, are sick of being taken for granted by the Liberals, and are tired of the old arguments (from the Bloc), we should vote for change and the NDP.
Pierre, I’m glad you called, but you aren’t going to win with recorded messages. You know how many volunteers you need to make a recorded message and send it out to a few hundred people? None. Just Pierre Ducasse and a computer.
I’ve already been called twice for the Bloc Québécois personally by Dr. Gilles Aubé, former and current candidate for the provincial Parti Québécois in Hull (who did well in the last by-election).
That’s how you win elections.

I have a feeling you’re feeling the heat with the sudden 20% vote the NDs are getting in Quebec. Considering they were at nil about two years ago; momentum is building. It may not pay off in seats this time around, give it time my friend and the Bloc Quebecois is increasingly becoming irrelevant. It’s good to know that Quebecers are realizing that there’s another progressive alternative, one that doesn’t pander to scare tactics of separatism.
Eric,
I agree with you about the recorded messages. I get them often from the NDP and it bugs the hell out of me. Half of the time, by the time the message actually starts rolling, I have missed half of it. It is all the more annoying if you get it on voice mail…
I get many of these recorded messages from Jack Layton himself. I have to laugh when I get home from work and my daughter tells me that Jack Layton called… LOL!!!
I am not sure what professional marketing company told the NDP that this type of contacting people would work. It certainly does not work for me.
Eric, what a shame you had to hear Pierre Ducasse sending you a recorded message. I have met this man and in person he is an extraordinarily talented individual who should win a seat in our parliament. No NDP member will forget how he stole the show from Jack at the leadership convention with his incredible oratory gift. In two speeches, he won the hearts of every delegate at the convention, speaking in both official languages.
Please do not be too hard on Pierre Ducasse, the man, because he seems to be stuck with the recorded message delivery in the NDP Quebec’s campaign. Perhaps if others like me, had more time to help working on the campaign, the telephone messages would be personal.
Actually these message are proven to be effective – they market test them. Just because it did not work on you (a partisan I might add) doesn’t mean they are not effective.
Northern Mike,
The Bloc is still away ahead in the polls, and could even improve on their 2006 performance.
Yes, increasingly irrelevant indeed. The last two days have the following results for the Bloc and the NDP
37%-43%
8%-17%
The NDP hasn’t been at 20% for weeks.
